Beefier burgers

by | Dec 16, 2012

Homemade burgers are full of texture and goodness.  They are likely to contain far more beef than any fast food burger you could find, and you know exactly what’s in them!  I had some leftover salad so just mixed it in for extra goodness – you can probably spot the cucumber and carrots! Here’s the original recipe – add your leftovers as you like…

1/2 slice granary bread

150g (6 ounces) lean minced beef

Half onion, grated

1/2 egg, beaten

Dash of Worcester sauce

1/2 tsp curry powder

Good pinch red chilli powder, optional

1/4 tsp mustard

Pinch of salt, if desired

  1. Preheat the grill to medium. Run some cold water over the bread and squeeze out the excess. Mix the soaked bread with all the other ingredients and shape into one large or two small burgers.
  2. Place directly onto the rack of the grill-pan to allow the fat to drain away during cooking. Grill each side for about 5-7 minutes or until cooked through.

Nutrition Notes – Regular hamburger buns made from white flour have a high glycaemic index (GI).  Instead, serve these burgers with a lower GI carb such as granary baps, spicy baked beans (recipe to follow) or bulgur wheat, and masses of crispy salad.
